Behind the trend sits a set of textile engineering challenges that make legwear one of the more technically demanding categories in apparel, and understanding them explains why quality varies so dramatically across the market.
Why Legwear Is Harder Than It Looks
A thigh high sock is a deceptively complex product. It must stretch to accommodate a wide range of leg shapes, grip without compressing, hold its position through a full day of movement, and maintain colour and shape through repeated wash cycles, all while remaining comfortable against skin for hours at a time. Successful legwear engineering balances all of these performance requirements without sacrificing comfort.
The fibre composition does most of this work. Typical constructions blend cotton or polyester with elastane content between 3 and 10 percent, but the percentages tell only part of the story.
